§ 01 · The vessel
F/V Providential is a 78-foot steel scallop dredge boat, built at Hatteras in New Bern in 1986 and acquired in 1998 by her current captain. She fishes Georges Bank on a four-week rotation; main propulsion is a Cummins KTA-19 at 425 hp; ship's service is a Northern Lights M99 (80 kW). She has carried New Bedford registration since 2002 and is on her third complete electronics refit.
§ 02 · What we were called for
The captain called the after-hours line at 21:14 on a Tuesday in February 2026. The boat had returned that afternoon with a faster-than-usual zinc loss reported on the survey haul, and a 60-Hz buzz off the main board that had been a month in the developing. The boat was at the Pope's Island slipway. The first walk happened the next morning.
What we found: a shore-power neutral that had thermally failed where it landed in the Marinco-style inlet (the inlet itself was 19 years old), a galvanic isolator that had failed shorted (Charles 2017 model, end-of-life), and an isolation transformer that was running 12 V on the secondary that should have been zero (a sign the transformer's bonding had been compromised by the same failure). The buzz on the main was the result.
We diagnosed it as a P-04 board upgrade (the board was 40 years old and the coordination was gone) plus a P-03 shore-power tie-in (the inlet, the cordage, and the isolator all needed to come out together).
§ 03 · Scope of work, in plain English
- Replace the 1986 Eaton DS-206 main with a new Eaton Magnum DS, 480/277 V wye, 600 A.
- Run a full SKM PowerTools coordination study, document the time-current curves.
- Run an IEEE 1584-2018 arc-flash analysis. Result: 4.7 cal/cm² at 18″ at the main, PPE Category 2 with a 36-inch boundary.
- Engrave and install arc-flash labels on every panel.
- Replace the shore-power inlet with a SmartPlug 100 A. Replace the cordage. Replace the galvanic isolator with a Victron VDI-32. Replace the isolation transformer with a Charles 100 A.
- Pre-survey walk against ABYC E-11 in week one. Re-walk before close-out.
- Bind the as-built drawings, the coordination study, and the arc-flash report into the boat's binder.
§ 04 · Timeline
| Day 1 (Wed) | Walk, diagnosis, single-page estimate same evening |
|---|---|
| Day 2 (Thu) | Captain signs. Eaton Magnum DS ordered — lead time eight days |
| Days 3–10 | SKM coordination study. Pre-walk findings worked. Cordage and inlet replaced. |
| Day 11 | New main arrives. Tear-out begins. |
| Days 12–22 | Install, megger, Hi-Pot, label. |
| Day 23 | Energize. Phase rotation correct. First load on the bench load-bank. |
| Day 24 | Fluke Ti200 thermography. All terminations cool. |
| Day 25 | Re-walk. Two minor findings (a chafing hold-down at the genset cable, a missing label on the engine-room emergency lighting) corrected on the spot. |
| Day 26 | Captain sign-off. Binder handed over. Boat back on its rotation. |
§ 05 · Outcome
Boat back on its scallop rotation on day 27. Six weeks of follow-on running with no callbacks. The captain texts on a Saturday morning to report the bunk-light circuit had been "the quietest she has run since I bought her." We think the same.
The arc-flash labels have already done their first day of work — an apprentice on a hired-in painter crew tried to open the main while the boat was on shore power and stopped at the boundary because the label said so.
We would have replaced the isolation transformer earlier. Charles' 2017 model was end-of-life two years before we put hands on it; the failure was overdue. The lesson is that the captains who are most attentive to their zinc anodes are the captains we should call back proactively when we know a transformer is in its end-of-life window.
